Manchester Orchestra's third full-length album Simple Math (Columbia Records) was released in 2011 and chronicles the journey and experiences of Andy Hull putting his life back together.

"It's the reaction to my marital, physical, and mental failures. But for the first time, I'm not blaming anyone but myself," Hull said.

Produced by Dan Hannon, Simple Math was the follow-up to Mean Everything To Nothing. It was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville and mixed by Joe Chiccarelli.

Simple Math is a concept album. The lush arrangements on display were a far stretch from the band's first two offerings. With compositions emotional, dark and complex, each song told the narrative from one man's brain; his mistakes, his regrets, and his realizations. And the lyrics, which take us firsthand through this life-changing experience, are poetic and raw, honest and passionate.

Alternative Press gave the record a 100 (out of 100) score. Saying: "Simple Math is a perfect interpretation of an imperfect man's life."

Rock Sound commented: "Throughout, the highs are tinged with sadness and the lows with hope, making Simple Math a complex and rewarding album that soars above the pack."

American Songwriter accurately stated: "They've perfected the balance of gorgeous songwriting and rabid musicianship."

The groundbreaking video for the title-track "Simple Math" was directed by the LA video duo DANIELS, and went on to win the UK Video of the year in 2011 at The MVA's. In 2012, VIMEO named it "Best Music Video of the Year" for 2011. It also sparked the relationship between DANIELS and the band, who would go on to work together years down the road, scoring the music to the film "Swiss Army Man" in 2016.

On May 12th, 2011, the band performed the song "Virgin" on The Late Show with David Letterman and were backed by The Brooklyn Youth Chorus.
